Woodlands Farm is a fragment of London's old countryside that offers a unique opportunity to conserve heritage landscape and promote biodiversity.
At heart this is a conservation and development project.
The ambitions of The Woodlands Farm Trust are to:
1. build a truly sustainable future through sensitive farming using native stock and working towards a sustainable, harmonious practice, minimising the impact of activities on the environment both local and global.
2. maintain the farm as a community resource, giving volunteers and the community access to education, training, experiences and tasks that they might not otherwise encounter.
3. conserve and improve the biodiversity of our 89 acres.
4. create a sustainable operating and financial structure for the future.
Aberdeen Angus Cattle
Aberdeen Angus is a breed of cattle commonly used in beef production. They were developed from cattle native to the counties of Aberdeenshire and Angus in Scotland and have been recorded there since 16th Century. The cattle became commonplace throughout the British Isles in the middle of the 20th century. Due to the harsh conditions in Scotland the Aberdeen Angus cattle are a very hardy breed. This breed is often cross bred with a dairy breed when needed for veal production as the pure bred calves are born small. Our Aberdeen Angus cattle are crossbred with the dairy breed Holstein.
Holstein
Holstein’s are a high performance dairy cow generated through selective breeding. Over the 1970s the breed was slowly developed and then became very popular as the dairy herd breed. Typically the female cows (heifers) are bred between 13-15 months of age. As cows are pregnant for 9 months the farmers aim for them to calve when they are between 23-26 months old.
